Defensive MVP commits to Boise State

Published: February 4, 2013

Twenty-eight players in this year’s recruiting class have agreed to play football for the Broncos.

The Boise State football team has added a commitment from the defensive MVP of the Texas state championship game.

Cornerback Cameron Hartsfield (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) of Allen (Texas) High committed Saturday on a visit to Boise State.

He previously committed to Nevada.

Boise State contacted Hartsfield two weeks ago, he said.

“I was still open to all my options and Boise State came in late,” he said. “I just wanted to check them out. I ended up loving it there.”

Hartsfield’s other offers were from UTSA and Stephen F. Austin, he said. He drew more recruiting interest after the 5A Division I (largest schools) championship game at Cowboys Stadium, where he made nine tackles and returned a fumble 56 yards. He played safety for Allen High School.

“That gave me a lot of exposure,” he said. “… I was all over the field that game, basically, and everybody noticed that.”

Hartsfield played two years of varsity and did not have his best season as a junior, he said. That likely limited his recruiting options, but it also motivated him for 2012.

“I have more confidence,” he said. “I was more mature as a person. The coaches trusted me with a lot of schemes that we did and I took advantage of that and I just went full speed every play.”

Hartsfield is the fifth cornerback commit in this class. The Broncos lost their two starting cornerbacks from last season — Jamar Taylor and Jerrell Gavins.
