The big chill: Boise deep freeze sticks around

Published: January 22, 2013

How cold? The Boise Airport recorded a low temperature of minus-3 just after 6 a.m. Monday — the coldest temperature in Idaho’s capital since December 2009. It was the third subzero morning in a row.

Others have it worse Ontario got down to 9 below Monday morning. Caldwell was minus-6 Sunday morning and minus-2 early Monday.

Historic? Boise is on track to record its fifth-coldest January since 1865. The average temp so far is 16.6, which is 13.9 degrees below normal.

Bad air: The inversion trapping the frigid air also is keeping pollution around. The DEQ issued another orange air quality alert for Tuesday, meaning vulnerable people should limit strenuous outdoor activity.

Relief on the way? The stagnant air might get pushed out of the Valley on Wednesday, when the temperature should reach at least 32.
