Boise Farmers Market looks at spring launch

Published: January 19, 2013

What’s the new market? The Boise Farmers Market will be a more farmer-centric market than the Capital City Public Market, said Lee Rice, owner of Rice Family Farms, a longtime Public Market vendor. Its board of directors includes vendors from the existing market, which Karen Ellis founded in the mid-1990s.

What’s Ellis’ role? The September firing of Ellis as executive director of the Public Market was a factor in forming The Boise Farmers Market Inc., said Rice. But several vendors had already discussed a new market before Ellis was dismissed, he said. Rice said Ellis is advising the board but has no official title. “It would be foolish not to utilize her talents,” he said.

Will the new market compete with the existing one? The new market’s board wants to operate downtown, in proximity to but not in conflict with its predecessor. Opening day is set for April 6.
