Karen Ann Hansen is being held in the Ada County Jail on a felony DUI charge after Meridian police say she was caught driving drunk Monday for the third time since last January.
Meridian police arrested Hansen on DUI charges in January and September of 2012, and she eventually pleaded guilty in both of those cases, according to Idaho court records. Hansen is charged with the felony DUI for Mondays arrest because it is her third over a 10-year-period.
Hansen is currently serving a two-year probation sentence for the second DUI and is not permitted to do any driving at all until November, so it is likely she will also be charged with a probation violation and for driving without a valid license.
Police arrested Hansen in her car in front of a liquor store in the 400 block of Meridian Road just after 2 p.m. Monday after getting a phone call from a clerk at the store who refused to sell Hansen beer because she appeared intoxicated, according to reports.
When police arrived, Hansen was in her running car, which was parked in front of the store. Police say Hansen had a hard time getting out of her car, smelled strongly of alcohol, and had difficulty staying balanced. Police say Hansen then failed field sobriety tests and was eventually taken to a local hospital, where employees took a blood sample for later evidence testing, according to reports.
Hansen was then arrested and booked into the jail.
Hansen will make her initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
The crime of felony DUI is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
