Canyon County students participated in the American Legion Nampa Oratorical contest on Jan. 12 in Nampa.

Genesis Amador from Nampa Liberty Arts Charter High School won first place; Cameron Brennan from Nampa Victory Charter High School won second.

Each contestant delivered a prepared oration on some aspect of the U.S.Constitution and the responsibilities of a citizen. They then spoke on an assigned topic drawn at random on some aspect of the Constitution.

Amador received a check of $100 and a place in the district competition. Brennan received a check for $75.

Each year the Idaho American Legion sponsors its Idaho American Legion High School Oratorical Contest as a way to encourage students to learn more about the history of the nation and its governing philosophy, political systems, and constitutional principles.

Winners at the national level can receive up to $18,000 in scholarship money. Last year, Meridian student Chas Baines won second place and $16,000. Additional scholarship money is also awarded for winners at the state, and regional levels.
