The 34-acre Map Rock site is home to one of Idaho's best-known petroglyph panels. Petroglyphs are images and other writings carved into stone.
In a Friday press release, the Canyon County Board of Commissioners announced that the county obtained the property through a land trade with the Farm Development Corp. The press release did not specify which parcels of land were involved in the trade.
The trade will allow the Canyon County Parks, Recreation and Waterways Department to develop educational programs and make site improvements said officials.
Map Rock is located approximately six miles from Highway 45 on Map Rock Road. Historians believe the Shoshone-Bannock people created the ancient petroglyphs approximately 1,300 years ago.
