Reward offered for tips on Boise studio theft

Published: January 12, 2013

The burglar apparently jimmied a lock to get into the suite in a BoDo building above Solid restaurant at 405 S. 8th St., sometime between Tuesday night and Thursday morning, said Tyler James Bush.

Bush, 34, is a sculptor and performer who is an artist in residence with the 8th Street Marketplace. That means his studio, donated in October for six months, is open to the public monthly for First Thursday.

He’s worried someone may have targeted the studio after visiting and finding out what was inside.

No art was damaged. But the thief — or thieves — stole valuable electronics, including a mini projector, mini Macintosh laptop and an old iPhone.

“It’s crazy because that building is pretty high-security,” Bush said. “It’s usually pretty hard to get up there.”

Karen Bubb, public arts manager for the city of Boise, said the burglary is the first at the studios since the artist-in-residence program began four years ago.

“The spaces have been really secure, and artists have been really comfortable being there at night,” Bubb said. “I don’t think it’s an indicator that it’s unsafe in the building or it will happen to other artists. It’s an anomaly.”

Still, Bubb said the burglary emphasizes the need to secure belongings and leave them out of sight, even in a locked room.

“We feel we’re so safe in Boise, we often don’t think twice about leaving something on the counter that may be attractive to a thief,” she said.

Bush had records of serial numbers for some of the items but not all, which could make it trickier to get his stuff back if police find it. But he’s scouring Craigslist and holding out hope someone will do the right thing. He’s offering a reward, no questions asked, if someone returns his items.

The prize? A work of art by him.

“Hopefully in time, that will be more valuable,” Bush said.

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest, said Charles McClure, spokesman for the Boise Police Department.

Tipsters should call Crime Stoppers at (208) 343-COPS, go online to www.343cops.com or text CRIMES or 274637 with the subject: Tip236.
