Idaho Steelheads lose three players to AHL affiliate

Forwards Austin Smith and Justin Dowling and defenseman Jace Coyle have been reassigned to Texas of the American Hockey League, Idaho coach Brad Ralph announced Monday.

Idaho and Texas are the primary development affiliates of the NHL’s Dallas Stars.

Smith is the Steelheads’ leader in goals (19) and Dowling leads the team in assists (33) and points (46). His point total is second-highest in the ECHL. Smith and Dowling are the two top scorers on the team. Dowling was recently voted as a starter for the upcoming ECHL All-Star Game.

In 18 games with Idaho, Coyle had 13 points (one goal, 12 assists).

The Steelheads play three games in California this weekend, and return home for a two-game series against Alaska on Jan. 18-19.
