Steelheads roll again, extend coach’s contract

Published: January 6, 2013

Eight Steelheads scored as Idaho defeated the Bakersfield Condors 8-3 on Saturday at CenturyLink Arena.

Idaho built a 7-0 lead before Bakersfield scored its first goal in the third period.

One of Idaho’s goals was scored by David Toews. The forward was released by Bakersfield on Thursday, signed by Idaho on Friday and made the 13-hour drive from California to score the third goal of the game against his former team.

It was the second time in two nights that Idaho routed Bakersfield. The Steelheads won 7-2 on Friday night.

The final goal of the game was scored by Idaho’s Austin Smith, his team-leading 19th. Smith’s highlight-reel goal from Friday night’s game was featured on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top Ten Plays.

RALPH SIGNS TWO-YEAR EXTENSION

Coach Brad Ralph is not yet halfway through the first season of his one-year contract. But he’s shown the organization enough to earn a contract extension.

Ralph is now signed through the 2014-15 season.

“We were confident that we got the right man when we went through the hiring process over the summer, and everything he’s done since arriving has supported that feeling,” Steelheads President Eric Trapp said. “There wasn’t a need to wait.”

The 32-year-old Ralph spent the previous two seasons as the coach of the Augusta RiverHawks of the Southern Professional Hockey League.
