Second annual Writers in the Attic Competition: Now through Friday, Feb. 22, submissions will be accepted for the second annual Writers in the Attic writing competition. This year’s theme is “detour.” Stories will be blind-judged by a local literary notable and be published as part of the Writers in the Attic 2013 anthology. Competition guidelines and submission forms can be found at www.TheCabinIdaho.org.

Boise’s Novel Orchard: Submissions are being sought for the zine NIBBLES. Appearing monthly, NIBBLES will give a glimpse of what writers in the Treasure Valley and beyond are doing. The zine is looking for prose under 4,000 words, poetry of 22 lines or fewer, and black and white original artwork. Covering Idaho Kids!: Wednesday, Jan. 9, 6-8 p.m. Are you struggling to provide health insurance for your children? Get the facts about the Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP). Early Literacy Story Time: Thursday, Jan. 10, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. This fun storytime for preschool-age children is also a workshop for parents to learn ways to help their children develop early literacy and math skills that will help them be successful in kindergarten and beyond. This series of story times runs on an eight-week cycle and focuses on a different skill each week. No registration is required. This week focuses on telling stories.
