Walker: Catalogs, videos, events help gardeners face winter

Published: January 3, 2013

Now that the weather has turned so cold you just want to curl up on the sofa under a fleece blanket, let’s talk about what to do after you’ve watched “Gardening with Ciscoe” (www.king5.com/ on-tv/gardening).

OK, there are all those garden catalogs you’ve been receiving since September. Did you get the latest catalog from Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh, N.C? Their catalog covers are collectors items among gardeners. You can see its latest catalog cover at www.plantdelights.com/CatalogCoverReq.asp.

How many of the famous gardeners on the cover do you recognize?

Amy Stewart, the author of several out-of-the-ordinary gardening books such as “Wicked Bugs” and “Wicked Plants,” has a new book coming out this spring.

She’s done extensive research on the origins of alcoholic beverages and their plant origins. The book, titled “The Drunken Botanist,” includes recipes and gardening information on growing your own beverages.

After seeing the very entertaining video ads for her three books, I’m ready to run out and buy them. You can see the video for “Wicked Bugs” at www.amystewart.com/books/wicked-bugs/ (scroll down a bit). The video for “Wicked Plants” is at www.amystewart.com/books/wicked-plants/ (again, scroll down a little). The video for her latest book is at http://drunkenbotanist.com/about-the-book/.

On Jan. 10, the Idaho Native Plant Society is showing the film “Dirt: The Movie.” It’s a movie about soil and what it does for us, how we’ve mistreated it and what we’ve learned from it. The movie starts at 7 p.m. at the MK Nature Center Auditorium.

On Jan. 11, the Sagebrush-Steppe Master Naturalists are hosting a speaker from the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. Jason Martin will be speaking about NESTWATCH, a citizen science project. For those who garden for the birds, this will be an interesting topic.

Both of the above programs are free and open to the public.

There’s one last item on today’s agenda. Many of you may remember that I belong to MJ Oresik’s bee co-op. I get to have bees in my yard and she does the heavy lifting. MJ has created a bee calendar and I’m so impressed with it.

She still has some calendars left for purchase. You can see sample pages at www.uberbees.com/2013-bee-calendar.html. Scroll down and click on any of the thumbnail photos to see the full sized version of the page.
