Free Nordic ski day is irresistible

Idaho’s Free Nordic Ski & Snowshoe Day is Saturday, Jan. 5, at Park N’ Ski areas and state parks around the state.

No parking passes or trail fees will be charged. Here are the details for Southwest Idaho:

IDAHO CITY PARK N’ SKI

What: In addition to free access to trails and parking at the areas, there will be open houses at the Skyline and Rocky Ridge backcountry yurts.

Getting there: 25 miles northeast of Idaho City off Idaho 21.

LAKE CASCADE STATE PARK

What: The state park will have its free ski day, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Hasbrouck Ranch Nordic Trail area. Hot food and beverages will be available for purchase. Nordic ski gear and snowshoes will be available for use. Instructors will be on hand to offer beginner lessons

Getting there: Drive north from the Treasure Valley on Idaho 55 past Smiths Ferry and into Round Valley. Continue to the Cabarton Road and turn left. Go 1.5 miles to the parking lot.

PONDEROSA STATE PARK

What: Ski and snowshoe lessons with equipment and guided tours from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Activity Center in the park.

Getting there: Drive 102 miles north from the Treasure Valley on Idaho 55 to McCall. Turn right on Railroad Avenue. Follow the signs.
