KUNA Occupants of the one-story house at 671 Syrup Court were not home when a neighbor reported the fire just before 7 p.m. Monday, a Kuna fire official said Tuesday.
Firefighters contained the fire to a childs bedroom in the house, but there was extensive smoke damage throughout. One of the familys dogs died from smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A fire official said the residents of the home are the family of Jayden Bennett, an 11-year-old boy who battled cancer before passing away Nov. 22. Firefighters know the family well, and Jayden rode the fire truck during a Kuna Days parade.
The family will be able to return to the house once its cleaned up. Anyone wanting to help with cash or a gift card is asked to drop off donations at the Kuna Fire Station at 150 W. Boise St.
