'Camouflage Christmas' will come to Boise veterans home Wednesday

Published: December 19, 2012

Members of the Idaho Air Guard, Idaho Army Guard plus Navy and Marine Reserve units from Gowen Field convoy to the Idaho State Veterans Home Wednesday to deliver Christmas gifts to residents.

The convoy is expected to arrive at the home, 320 Collins Road, about 11:30 a.m.

Nearly 500 gifts will be placed around the Christmas tree in the home's dining room. Men and women from all branches of service will pay visits to veterans before returning to their duties at the base or with their civilian employers. Many of the service members will return to help the veterans open their gifts at the home's Christmas party on Friday.

Planning for this annual event begins in July, say officials.

“Military families are far from wealthy; yet they make sure our veterans have Christmas gifts each year,” said Phil Hawkins, volunteer coordinator at the Boise Veterans Home. “The service men and women from Gowen Field face ongoing challenges like deployment; but they remain committed to this program. We are overwhelmed by their generosity and dedication.”

Anyone who would like to obtain more information about this program is invited to contact Phil Hawkins at 246-8750 or 246-8727.
