Key matchup: Utah State vs. Toledo

TOLEDO’S OFFENSE VS. UTAH STATE’S PASS RUSH

Utah State ranks eighth in the nation with 39 sacks — and they come from all over the defense. Sixteen players have contributed, including seven guys with at least three sacks.

First-year coordinator Dave Aranda uses what he calls “simulated pressure” to get to quarterbacks. He often only rushes four out of the 3-4 scheme — but which four is the trick. He might bring a cornerback or a safety, or blitz two linebackers and drop an end into coverage. “Those things have been effective,” he said.

That pressure has helped the Aggies rank 15th in the nation in pass-efficiency defense and total defense.

“Utah State’s got an unbelievable defense,” Toledo quarterback Austin Dantin said. “They’re going to be a great challenge.”

Toledo counters with what Aranda says might be the most balanced offense the Aggies have seen this year. That could slow down the pass rush.

The Rockets rush for 197.5 yards per game and throw for 258.6.

“You really aren’t able to pin your ears back in either phase,” Aranda said. “... They’re physical and they’ll spread you out with formations.”
