A black poodle with a distinct orange stripe was stolen from a pickup truck a Boise Wal-Mart last Friday, and police are asking for help identifying two suspects.
Owner Samantha Simonds and her supporters are offering a $1,500 reward for tips that bring Dallas home.
A citizen who heard of the theft from a post Simonds made on Craigslist believes she may have spotted the pooch with two women at another Wal-Mart on 12th Avenue in Nampa Friday. The women purchased dog-related items and left with a dog that matched the description of the stolen poodle, according to the Boise Police Department.
The women were spotted at the store about 8:15 p.m., Simonds said, less than two hours after she exited the Wal-Mart at 8300 W. Overland Road to find Dallas gone. Boise police say the dog is worth more than $1,000. Simonds, 22, owns Paw Spa Grooming Salon in Meridian and said Dallas "is like a walking advertisement."
"I wanted to do something unique," Simonds said.
Surveillance photos from the Boise Wal-Mart recorded the theft but didn't get a good image of the thieves or their getaway car. But cameras at the Nampa Wal-Mart recorded images of the suspects, one of whom appears to have a small black dog tucked under an arm. Boise police released the photos Tuesday in hopes someone will recognize the women. Photos of Dallas also were released.
Simonds said Dallas was in the cab of her truck and was either coaxed or pried out the vented window by the person who took him.
"We're hoping somebody recognizes this animal, because he's pretty unique," said Charles McClure, spokesman for the Boise Police Department.
Simonds believes the women stole Dallas on a whim because of his orange stripe.
"You've got to be a low-life scum bag to do something like that," Simonds said.
A Facebook page called Find Dallas has gained more than 500 followers, and Simonds said community support for her search has been incredible.
"Everybody is spreading the word," she said.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for tips that lead to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call (208) 343-COPS, submit tips online at www.343cops.com, or text CRIMES or 274637, subject: Tip236."you gott be a low life scum bag to do soemthing like that"
