How much snow did Boise, Bogus Basin get this weekend — and is more on the way?

Published: December 9, 2012

A half inch of snow fell in Boise Saturday, and another .3 inches fell Sunday morning, but the Treasure Valley only got a trace of snow early Monday morning, according to National Weather Service reports.

The lack of snow in the Boise area Monday morning might be good news for motorists and pedestrians as the work and school week begins, but it’s not what winter recreationists want for the mountains — particularly the Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area, which could use an old-fashioned winter storm or two.

Bogus Basin reported five inches of new snow by early Sunday but no significant new accumulation Monday morning. That means the resort is at least 11 inches short of the snow they need to open up some skiing on the mountain.

The mountain may get a few more inches of snow in the middle of the week and the beginning of next weekend, but the short term forecast does not show any major snow dump in the immediate future.

The weather is expected to dry up by Monday afternoon, and we should expect a mostly sunny Tuesday in the Boise area, with a estimated high temperature of 47 degrees, before a new system moves through that night.

There’s a 40 percent chance of rain in the Treasure Valley on Wednesday with an estimated high temperature of 43 degrees, which means that rain in the valley should translate into some snow accumulation in the mountains before that system moves through. Bogus Basin has a 50 percent chance of snow Wednesday.

Thursday is expected to be cold and clear, with meteorologists predicting partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 37 degrees for the Treasure Valley. A new system is expected to move through the area Friday, which brings with it a 30 percent chance of snow showers in the Boise area.

While the week will start off a little warmer than usual, is expected to feel like a pretty typical December by end when estimated high temperatures are expected to be in the low 40s and high 30s.

Bogus Basin officials say the ski area needs at least 14 inches of good snow to open, and much more than that if it's light and powdery. Right now the mountain has 5 inches.
