Boise’s 150th anniversary celebration starts Thursday: City unveils Sesqui Shop on Main Street

Published: December 6, 2012

What happens Thursday? Mayor David Bieter and Arts and History Director Terri Schorzman will kick off Boise 150, the yearlong celebration of the city’s founding in 1863. The event includes the announcement of recipients of Boise 150 grants, samples of art projects, an overview of the celebration’s major events in 2013 and a “Share Your Story” history station.

When and where? The kickoff starts at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the new Sesqui Shop, 1008 Main St.

What can we expect next year? In early February, the city will host “Thinking 150,” a series of presentations and conversations on Boise’s place in the historical and modern West. The Mayor’s Music Celebration takes place in October.

What’s the main event? Boise 150’s signature event will take place between July 4 and July 7. It will start in Ann Morrison Park and culminate in a celebration of the city’s original platting — July 7, 1863 — in Julia Davis Park.

What is the Sesqui Shop? Right now, the shelves aren’t full, but as the celebration progresses the shop will offer a growing selection of trinkets, relics and documents related to the anniversary, spokesman Adam Park said. Some of the items will be specially made by participating businesses.
