Makin’ Tracks: count birds with the Golden Eagle Audubon Society

The Golden Eagle Audubon Society has several Christmas bird counts scheduled this month:

• Sunday, Dec. 9, Family birding walk and kids Christmas bird count, 9 to 11 a.m. at the Hyatt Hidden Lake Reserve at Maple Grove and Chinden Blvd., in Boise. Meet in lower parking lot. For information, contact Pam Conley, 869-0337.

• Dec. 15, Boise Christmas Bird Count. Meet at 7 a.m. at Idaho Fish and Game’s Trophy Room, 600 S. Walnut St. in Boise. For information, contact RL Rowland, boisebirdguy@aol.com, 336-9808.

• Dec. 19, Garden Valley Christmas bird count. Meet at 7:30 a.m. at Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop in downtown Crouch. For information, contact Spencer Walters, spencerw100@yahoo.com, and Gary Worthington, worthingtonjanet@yahoo.com, 853-2599.

• Dec. 22, Nampa Christmas Bird Count. Meet at 7:15 p.m. at the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, 13751 Upper Embankment Road in Nampa. For information, contact Denise Hughes and Cheryl Huizinga, 880-5687.

• Dec. 29, Bruneau Christmas Bird Count. Meet at 7 a.m. at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management office, 3948 Development Ave. in Boise. For information, contact, Larry Ridenhour, 863-5596, ridenhour.larry@gmail.com.

Five Idaho authors will be signing books at a special Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association event, Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Boise Hotel & Conference Center, 3300 Vista Ave. in Boise.

It’s open to the public and runs from 2:30-4 p.m. The authors featured at the book-signing are:

• Jo Deurbrouck, who just received a National Outdoor Book Award for her book, “Anything Worth Doing.”

• Bob Volpert, owner of Idaho River Journeys, and Dick Linford, with ECHO, the Wilderness Company, authors of “Halfway to Halfway & Other River Stories.”

• Stan Potts, longtime big game outfitter, author of “The Potts Factor’s — This Olde House.”

• Richard Holm Jr., a commercial pilot, author of “Bound for the Backcountry: A History of Idaho's Remote Airstrips.”

Idaho Fish and Game’s December Wildlife Express has a feature on yellow perch and also recipes for cooking perch.

The recipes are fried yellow perch, yellow perch nuggets and baked butter herb perch fillets. Go to fishandgame.idaho.gov/public/media and then click on Wildlife Express.
