16-year-old Caldwell girl hospitalized after car hits her in crosswalk; driver cited

Published: December 5, 2012

A 16-year-old girl suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning when she was struck by a car while walking in a marked crosswalk near Canyon Springs High School, Caldwell Police Lt. Devin Riley said. Paramedics took the girl to a Boise hospital for treatment.

Benjamin Barch, a 30-year-old Caldwell man, is charged with two misdemeanors — inattentive driving and no insurance.

The crash was reported at 7:37 a.m. at 10th and Denver streets.

Police say Barch was driving south on 10th Street at about 25 mph when he struck the girl in the crosswalk. The impact of the collision threw the girl, and she's believed to have suffered head injuries and broken bones, Riley said.

Riley said today's accident wasn't the first time a student was hit in a crosswalk at 10th and Denver. The city plans to remove that markings for that crosswalk and put in flashing pedestrian crossing lights at nearby 10th and Elgin streets.
