Zoo Boise adds razor wire in aftermath of monkey killing

Published: November 30, 2012

Razor wire has been added to a section of fence at Zoo Boise after a break-in left a monkey dead.

The wire was added this week, Boise Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Amy Stahl said.

"We’re just trying to make a fence that’s difficult to climb over even more difficult," Stahl said.

Stahl didn't know the length of the new wire.

Zoo officials have been reviewing security procedures since a burglary Nov. 17 in which 22-year-old Michael Jacob Watkins, of Weiser, is accused of killing a Pathas monkey.

Watkins remains in the Ada County Jail on $150,000 bond. Police say he told them he killed the monkey in self defense.

Director Steve Burns also is asking other zoos about their security procedures.
