Effort to recall Middleton mayor falls short

Published: November 28, 2012

The Canyon County elections office has completed its review of signatures on the petitions for the recall of Middleton Mayor Darin Taylor and determined that they do not meet the required number of signatures to move forward with the recall election.

Concerned Citizens of Middleton last week submitted 583 signatures to the county for certification. The county compared the names against the voter registration records and determined 417 of the signatures to be valid — 102 signatures short of the 519 signatures needed to trigger a recall election.

According to the county, 132 signatures belonged to persons not registered to vote or not registered to vote at the time the petition was signed; 23 signatories lived outside the Middleton’s city limits; eight signatures did not include a street address; and three signatures were duplicates.

Under Idaho law, if a petition is found not to have the required number of signatures, the officer shall continue in office and no new recall petition may be circulated for a period of 90 days against the same officer.

The citizens group launched the recall effort in early September, releasing a 100-page report dominated by documents that detail actions the group categorized as illegal, unethical and ill-advised.
