The lot, located on Victory Road west of the Orchard Street overpass, is scheduled to open Tuesday at 5 a.m. It has been open intermittently to accommodate travelers since its expansion was completed in 2009.
Parking in the economy lot will cost $7.50 a day.
Opening the economy lot will compensate for loss of parking spaces at the airport's short-term parking lot west of the original parking garage. An expansion of the garage will built on top of the existing short-term lot.
"When we are investing in capital infrastructure, it is important to plan for the long-term," noted Airport Director Rebecca Hupp. "This project will accommodate our parking needs for the next 20 years. Given the competitive construction environment and the favorable interest rates, there is not a better time to issue bonds." The Garage expansion, approved by Boise City Council last week, will add 770 protected parking stalls. Airport officials predict the project will cost $13 million. Airport revenue bonds will cover $11 million of the cost, the remainder will come from airport cash reserves. The economy lot will remain open throughout the expansion of the parking garage, which is anticipated to be completed before the Thanksgiving holiday in 2013.
