Idaho colleges roundup: C of I volleyball wins opener of national tourney

The Coyotes defeated Menlo 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 in the opening round of the NAIA National Championships on Saturday afternoon in Caldwell. The College of Idaho (22-6) won for the 98th time in 101 home matches dating to 2005. The Coyotes advance to play in the NAIA finals in Sioux City, Iowa, which run from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1. The pool play assignments will be determined at 4 p.m. Sunday.

IDAHO MEN’S BASKETBALL: Montana rallied to defeat the Vandals 66-63 in Moscow. Idaho (0-2) had a 15-point lead midway through the second half, but the Grizzlies dominated the rest of the way. Stephen Madison had a game-high and career-high 22 points for Idaho, and Kyle Barone added 19.

IDAHO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Brooke Reilly (guard, Spokane), Karlee Wilson (point guard, Lewiston High) and Nejra Solo (Post, Bosnia) signed letters of intent.

BOISE STATE VOLLEYBALL: Colorado State won 25-21, 25-7, 25-23 at Bronco Gym in Boise State’s home finale. Liz Harden led the Broncos (16-14, 7-7 MW) with eight kills. They close out the season with matches at UNLV and Fresno State this week. There is no conference tournament this year.

• Four high school recruits have signed letters of intent to play for the Broncos in 2013. They are: Maddy O’Donnell (Irvine, Calif.), Laney Hayes (Bend, Ore.), Izzy Miller (Phoenix) and Kaitlyn Oliver (Helena, Mont.).

BSU SWIMMING AND DIVING: No. 13 Arizona defeated the Broncos 166-108 in Tucson, Ariz. Boise State (2-1) won three events, but it wasn’t enough to prevent its first loss of the season.

• The team announced nine athletes have signed letters of intent: Swimmers — Brittany Ayoama (Stockton, Calif.), Jenny Barcellona (Danville, Calif.), Felicity Cann (Tacoma, Wash.), Whitney Jorgensen (Roseville, Calif.), Katelyn Martin (Fullerton, Calif.), Mandie Siehs (Menomonee, Wis.) and Emily Tanasse (Kent, Wash.). Divers — Karlie Kriewall (Alber Lea, Minn.) and Jordan Mathens (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.).

IDAHO STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Bengals defeated Air Force 83-51 in Pocatello. Junior forward Cydney Horton led Idaho State (1-2) with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO MEN’S BASKETBALL: Westminster defeated the Coyotes 68-50 to claim its eighth Golden Rule Shootout title in Caldwell. Sydney Donaldson lead the C of I (3-5) with 11 points.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Trevecca Nazarene defeated the Coyotes 69-61 to claim the championship game of the Twin Rivers Therapy Classic in Lewiston. Chakala Carthen led the C of I with 16 points.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO SWIMMING: The Coyotes broke four school records as the men’s and women’s teams each finished fourth at the Northwest Invitational in Walla Walla, Wash.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE VOLLEYBALL: The Crusaders defeated Alaska Fairbanks 25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 25-18 in Nampa. Senior Becky Flores led NNU (15-14, 8-10 GNAC) with 13 kills.

BSU GOLF: Genevieve Ling (Malaysia) will join the team in January. Dana Clary (Cedar Park, Texas), Haliee Pieper (Watertown, S.D.) and Jamie Donizio (Henderson, Nev.) will join the team for the 2013-14 season.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE BASEBALL: Drew Helmstadter (catcher, Palm Desert, Calif.) signed a letter of intent.
