NBA Development League: Idaho Stampede training camp report

Published: November 17, 2012

News of the day: Plenty of speed and athleticism

There have been a few themes in training camp, and two key points continued Friday: speed and athleticism.

With Henry “Hank’’ Thorns and Jai Lucas at point guard during three 5-minute scrimmages, there was plenty of speed on the floor.

Athleticism is abundant, especially with Seth Tarver, Justin Holiday and Garrett Green on the roster.

Coach Mike Peck is testing both qualities with a heavy dose of scrimmages. “We want to let them play,’’ Peck said.

• The Stampede waived Jared Cunningham (6-9, Cleveland State), leaving the roster with 15 players. It must be trimmed to 10 by Wednesday.

Player of the day: Paul Carter

The 6-8 veteran forward and second-year Stampede player had a huge day Friday.

His name was on the lips of coaches and others close to the program, as he showed a bit of everything: shooting, rebounding, defensive awareness and leadership.

“I’m happy to be back,’’ Carter said. “I can’t complain.’’

The Illinois-Chicago product played in 34 games last year after he was cut by the Utah Jazz.

“He had his best practice of training camp (Friday),’’ assistant coach Scott Williams said. “He showed he understands the offense and makes teammates better."
