Boise State rolled up 411 yards of total offense (155 rushing and 256 passing) and scored touchdowns on five of its eight first-half possessions in the blowout victory. Quarterback Joe Southwick threw three touchdowns, including a 46-yard beauty to wide receiver Aaron Burks. Boise States vertical passing game has alternated between inconsistent and non-existent, so it was a positive for the Broncos to hit on some deep throws. Burks had five catches for 107 yards, becoming the first Boise State receiver this season to eclipse the 100-yard mark. Six different offensive players scored touchdowns, including rushing scores from Shane Williams-Rhodes, Jay Ajayi and Grant Hedrick. Boise State scored five touchdowns on five red-zone possessions. The Broncos production in the second half wasnt great (one touchdown in five possessions, including punts on the first three), but by then this game was well decided. The run game averaged just 3.7 yards per carry and that included 21 yards on a fake punt. Grade: B+
The Broncos were fantastic once again on defense, sacking Hawaii quarterbacks six times, forcing five turnovers and holding the Warriors to a school-record low minus-14 yards rushing. Defensive ends Sam Ukwuachu and Demarcus Lawrence were dominant, combining for three sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss and a fumble return for a touchdown. Tyler Horn, pressed into action at defensive tackle because of the injury to Mike Atkinson, had two sacks and a forced fumble. True freshman cornerback Donte Deayon, in his second game, led the Broncos with six tackles and had an interception. Boise States first-string defense didnt allow a point at all. The defense hasnt allowed a point in the first half in seven of the last eight games. Sure it was Hawaii, but the defense has been proving it all season. Grade: A
Boise State allowed a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for the second consecutive week. The Broncos, one of the best in the nation earlier this season, are now 58th nationally in kickoff return yardage defense. Weve got a lot of work to do on our kickoff team. Its really surprising because weve been so good and all of a sudden one happens and now all of a sudden weve lost our mojo in there, coach Chris Petersen said. So well be back to the drawing board. The Broncos resorted to kicking short or squib kicks to avoid Hawaii return man Mike Edwards (three return TDs this season). Special teams werent a complete disaster, though. Chris Potters 37-yard punt return in the first quarter set up Boise States first touchdown. Josh Borgman recovered a muffed punt and punter Trevor Harman ran for 21 yards on a fake punt. Grade: C-
The staff and players deserve credit for getting over the loss to San Diego State and putting together a strong performance against Hawaii. As disappointing as San Diego State was, we did a great job showing up on Tuesday, had three great days of practice, came out here and played football, the game we signed up to play. We had fun, Southwick said. The Broncos played several players at different spots (Horn, Faraji Wright, Tommy Smith and Ebo Makinde all lined up at new positions on occasion). Boise State is trying to overcome suspensions and injuries. The quick contribution of a player like Deayon is also a testament to the staff and the players. Grade: A
