Priest affiliated with Boise hospital wins million dollar grant

Published: November 10, 2012

Father Rick Frechette has received a $1 million Opus Prize grant for his charitable work in Haiti. The Saint Alphonsus Foundation has supported Frechette’s work at the St. Damien Hospital and the Our Little Brothers and Sisters orphanage for nearly two decades through its Project Haiti program.

Frechette, who is also a medical doctor, has visited Boise many times to meet with local donors and lead services at local churches.

He is the sole recipient of a $1 million grant from the Opus Prize Foundation, a private, nonprofit foundation. Two others doing charitable work in Bolivia and Brazil each received $100,000.

The prize identifies “exceptional unsung social innovators and highlights their unique entrepreneurial approaches, which gives power to the disenfranchised, opportunities to the poorest and inspires others to pursue lives of service.”
