Garden City police: Officers have to pull drunk driver from burning car on Glenwood Drive

Garden City police say 33-year-old Joshua Self will be charged with a DUI and a felony count of eluding arrest after he is released from the hospital when he recovers from injuries he suffered in a car crash on Glenwood Street late Wednesday night.

Garden City and Boise police pulled Self and another man out of Self’s burning car through the sunroof following the crash, which was proceeded by a short police pursuit, Sgt. Jerry Walbey said.

A Garden City officer tried to pull Self’s car over in the 5400 block of Chinden Boulevard for an undisclosed traffic violation just after 11 p.m. but Self ignored sirens and drove away, according to reports. The officer began to follow Self but stopped the pursuit moments later, turning off lights, because Self was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed up the hill on Glenwood, Walbey said.

Police say Self, who was driving without a valid license, lost control of his car while trying to turn on to Goddard Street. The car jumped a curb and hit a tree before coming to rest on its side in a yard of a home on Glenwood, when it caught on fire, police said.

Police arriving at the crash broke the sunroof to get Self and another man out of the car. Boise fire crews arrived moments later and put out the blaze, according to reports.

Paramedics took Self and the other man to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. The passenger was treated and released Thursday morning. Self was still in the hospital as of 8 a.m. Thursday.
