Makin’ Tracks: film festival, fishing, raptors, celebrating wilderness volunteers

The Backcountry Film Festival will premiere Friday, Nov. 9, at the Egyptian Theatre at 700 West Main St. in Boise.

Tickets are $10 at the box office or online at egyptiantheatre.net.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for drinks and raffle sign up. Films start at 7 p.m.

The lineup includes seven films featuring backcountry skiing and other winter sports. For details, backcountryfilmfestival.org.

The Selway-Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation is hosting a fundraiser and celebration of a season of volunteer wilderness field work from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9, at the Linen Building, 1402 Grove St. in Boise.

The event is free and open to the public.

The event includes a keynote presentation by Idaho author Cort Conley, music from the Hokum Hi-Flyers and a silent auction with artwork and gear.

The foundation is as a partner with the Payette, Salmon-Challis, Bitterroot and Nez Perce-Clearwater national forests in working in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and surrounding wildlands.

All day-use fees will be waived by the Boise National Forest for the Veterans Day weekend Nov. 10-12.

While most day-use sites remain open, many have limited amenities, such as closed restroom facilities, because of the time of year.

The Wild About Life free monthly lecture will be “Wintering Raptors in Idaho” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, 13751 Upper Embankment Road in Nampa.

Neil Paprock will give the presentation. He did his master’s research at Boise State University and focused on the population changes of wintering raptors over the past 20 years in the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area.

Idaho Fish and Game is stocking 16,000 rainbow trout in Southwest Idaho waters in November.

ParkCenter Pond in Boise was stocked Monday, Nov. 5, with 1,000 fish. The Boise River got 2,250 fish on the same day.
