Ada County coroner identifies man who turned gun on self after 5 1/2-hour standoff with Meridian police

Published: November 7, 2012

Johnny William Austin died from a shotgun wound to his head, according to the Ada County Coroner's Office.

The 33-year-old man barricaded himself in a garage near Chief Joseph Elementary School Monday morning, after police tried to arrest him on a warrant for failing to appear in court on drug charges.

Police said Austin pointed a shotgun at them before he retreated to the garage. They heard a gunshot while they were setting up a perimeter around the house, then used an armored SWAT vehicle to tear the garage door off. They sent in a robot, which allowed them to safely see and communicate with him.

The incident began at about 10 a.m. and ended at 3:42 p.m., when Austin took his own life, said Meridian Police Deputy Chief Tracy Basterrechea. The man did not own the house but had stayed with people there, police said.

"We will process the scene and see if we can find any indication why it came to this point," Basterrechea said Monday.
