Phillips: Has our Indian summer ended?

Published: November 7, 2012

It’s with mixed feelings I report that it’s going to get chilly. I think fall should look and act like fall, and that means chilly mornings, mild afternoons with the constant chance of rain or snow. But it’s hard to complain about 70 degrees in November.

It’s been a weird one for me. I was in a blizzard in late October (you can read about it in the cover story), then came home to sunny and warm.

It’s been a little hard to wrap my head around it, especially in regard to fishing.

The bass guys had a tournament last weekend on C.J. Strike and caught a bunch of smallmouths and at least one giant largemouth. Maybe the new cast-and-blast should be bass fishing and duck hunting at C.J., but that just doesn’t seem right.

As I write this, the morning low was in the 40s, and that’s forecasted to be the high this weekend.

I realize this is a fishing report and not a weather report, but I think you see where I’m heading. It’s going to get considerably colder fast, and that usually doesn’t bode well for fishing.

I think I’m going to sit this one out this weekend, or maybe take a quick trip to the Boise River to see if I can hook a steelhead.

Not that I am afraid of cold weather, I just like to catch fish, and the conditions aren’t looking favorable.

Of course, I could be wrong, and I will take no offense whatsoever if you go fishing and prove it. In fact, I encourage it. Be sure to email me a photo and tell me how stupid I was to stay home. I won’t be offended, I will appreciate it.
