The natural-foods store, opening Nov. 14, will include a tap room for eating and drinking.

When was the last time you saw a band perform live in a grocery store?

That’s exactly what patrons of the River Room on the second floor of Whole Foods Market will experience from time to time, store team leader Bruce Green says. Store representatives already have begun lining up acoustic music acts from around the Treasure Valley.

Besides live music, the River Room will feature 16 beers on tap, wine and a menu that offers foods — including cheese plates, sandwiches and hot bar and deli items — prepared in the store downstairs. Windows facing north and east will offer views of the Foothills. A gas fireplace will decorate one wall.

The River Room isn’t the only Whole Foods store to include a tap room. But like the rest of the store, it has a unique design made specifically to fit its surroundings, Green said.

The River Room will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. A coffee bar in the store will be open during store hours, which run from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Green said his leadership team moved into the 35,000-square-foot store Oct. 24. Between 75 percent and 80 percent of more than 200 employees are Treasure Valley residents, he says. The rest are veteran Whole Foods employees who transferred here.

Here are photos from an Oct. 24 visit to the store, which is going up west of Broadway Avenue between Myrtle and Front streets alongside a new Walgreens drug store.
