Key matchup: Boise State vs. Wyoming

BOISE STATE’S BUDDING OFFENSE VS. WYOMING’S POROUS DEFENSE

The Boise State offensive players have been saying it for weeks: They’re close.

“We all see it out there,” senior wide receiver Chris Potter said after last week’s 32-7 win. “It’s one of those things where we’re slowly breaking through.”

This could be the week where the dam breaks. The Broncos, whose only 40-point outburst this season was fueled by five Southern Miss turnovers, have addressed their preseason question marks. Junior quarterback Joe Southwick has completed 67 percent of his passes with two interceptions (non-Hail Mary division) in the past four games. Freshman tailback Jay Ajayi has allowed for a 1-2 punch in the run game. And sophomore Dallas Burroughs and junior Aaron Burks have emerged as dual deep threats.

Now they just need the unit to click.

On Saturday, the Broncos will face one of the Mountain West’s worst defenses with a patchwork secondary.

“We’ve got to get some things cleaned up,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. “If they’ll continue to work as hard as they have been in practice, I know we can get in a better rhythm.”
