Game breakdown: Boise State vs. Wyoming

Published: October 27, 2012

BRONCOS WITH THE BALL

Youthful mistakes: Boise State has committed 11 turnovers in seven games, which is more than the Broncos would like but not a terrible number. A closer look, though, shows an interesting trend — all six lost fumbles have been committed by true freshmen or inexperienced sophomores. The other five turnovers are interceptions thrown by junior quarterback Joe Southwick, who is playing regularly for the first time.

Defense on the move: Defenses that move their linemen at the snap have given Boise State problems in the run game. Wyoming did that last year, but hasn’t shown it much this year. “I’m sure if they look back at the tape,” tight ends coach Scott Huff said, “they’re going to say, ‘Hey, that was pretty good, we should continue to do that.’ ” Said left guard Joe Kellogg: “If they’re going to move around, you can’t come off the ball as hard. You have to play under control and let the movement happen in front of you.”

Hundred for Miller: Boise State sophomore wide receiver Matt Miller needs three catches to reach 100 for his career. This is his 21st game. Austin Pettis, who holds the school record with 229 catches, needed 27 games to reach the century mark.

COWBOYS WITH THE BALL

A two-QB system: Wyoming rotated quarterbacks Brett Smith, a sophomore, and Jason Thompson, a true freshman, last week at Fresno State. Both run well. It’s uncertain how they’ll handle the quarterbacks this week, but Smith clearly has been more effective. Smith has an efficiency rating of 150.16; Thompson’s is 92.91.

First-half dominance: Boise State has shut out its opponent in the first half of five straight games, allowing an average of 112 yards in those halves. The shutout streak is the longest for the school since at least 1980 (prior records are incomplete). The single-season record is six, set in 2009 and matched in 2010. The Broncos have outscored opponents 118-19 in the first half.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Frisina trend continues: Boise State senior kicker Michael Frisina is 9-for-9 from 30 yards and in and 0-for-5 from outside 30 yards. That means the Broncos have to reach the 13-yard line to be within his current range. Frisina has the leg for longer kicks, but coaches say he’s not showing confidence in his leg.

NOTES

Wyoming coach suspended: Wyoming coach Dave Christensen is suspended for this game. He wasn’t allowed to participate in preparations either. Assistant head coach Pete Kaligis has the reins.

Playing with the lead: Boise State has not trailed in the past five and a half games.
