BI Editor David Staats: What some critics said in our survey

Published: October 24, 2012

FROM THE EDITOR DAVID STAATS

Last week I wrote about how we appreciate the overwhelmingly positive comments readers made on our first reader survey last month.

But a few weren’t favorable.

“Most of the interesting news in BI has already been covered in the daily papers and seems most redundant,” one reader wrote.

“The Idaho Business Review is still beating you on some stories,” wrote another. “The last part (bankruptcies, divorces, etc.) is like a gossip column,” wrote a third.

Four people offered variations of the already-covered comments. The weekly Catching Up roundup on this page repeats previously reported news for people who missed it in the newspaper or online. Some of the StateImpact Idaho features we publish cover ground the Statesman or BI have trod, but usually with new details and photos. The rest of the magazine is all new.

The Idaho Business Review does beat us on a few stories. While I think our business coverage is smarter and more enterprising, even a winning team cannot expect to shut out a capable opponent.

And our Who’s Doing What section? Its main purpose is to help business people, like lenders and salespeople, learn where problems or opportunities lie. But it does include some public records that aren’t pleasant for the people listed.

We hear these criticisms and consider what they mean for us, even if we end up agreeing to disagree. Even criticism reflects readers who care. So keep it coming.
