Key matchup: Boise State vs. UNLV

UNLV’S FRESHMAN QB VS. BOISE STATE’S DEFENSE

Boise State’s defense has flustered quarterbacks for several years now. This season, the Broncos rank 13th in the nation in pass-efficiency defense, they’ve allowed a meager two touchdown passes — covering 2 and 3 yards — and they’ve recovered a quarterback fumble in four straight games.

Enter UNLV freshman Nick Sherry, a 6-foot-5 pocket passer who averages 253 passing yards per game.

Sherry relies on a strong run game to set up the pass. If the Rebels aren’t able to run, his job could get difficult.

“We definitely want to put the stress on him,” senior defensive tackle Mike Atkinson said. “... We’ve got to keep the pressure on.”

In addition to the run, the Rebels use the “quick game” — a package of short throws — to take pressure off Sherry. It also leads to the deep ball. The Rebels have 15 completions of at least 25 yards and their top two wide receivers average 14 yards per catch.

“(Sherry) is growing each and every week,” sophomore left tackle Brett Boyko said. “You can see it through practice. He’s very smart behind center. I’m glad I get to see him grow up to be a great quarterback, hopefully.”
