Nike’s most popular idea for the Boise State football team’s uniform was also its most basic.

Go black.

The Broncos will wear black shoes, pants, jerseys and helmets — the matte-black look that’s all the rage — for Saturday’s home game against UNLV. It’s the fourth time in three seasons that Nike has designed a specialty uniform for the Broncos.

“It’s going to be sweet,” defensive tackle Mike Atkinson said. “We’ve been asking for the last five years to get jerseys that are black and we finally get them my senior year, so I’m excited. … It’s just a dominating color.”

The Broncos joined the uniform revolution with Pro Combat uniforms for the season opener. The game marked the debut of the Pro Combat helmet — a large bronco head on one side of a blue helmet instead of the traditional Boise State logo. That helmet has become a staple in the wardrobe, but the light gray jerseys were sold as a fundraiser. The Broncos also wore new all-blue uniforms in their bowl game. Those were given to the players.

Nike delivered Pro Combat uniforms for the season opener again — this time in all white, including the helmet with the large Bronco head. The uniform pieces became part of the wardrobe. The Broncos wore all white this year at Southern Miss and have used the white helmets four times since their debut.

2012 (UNLV)

The Broncos participate in the blackout trend Saturday with new Nike duds that are black from head to toe. The helmet again features Nike’s large bronco head. The school hasn’t said what will happen to the uniforms, but the matte-black helmets could be mixed with other uniform colors.
