Idaho colleges: Boise State’s Bettles, Sereke move on at regionals

Andrew Bettles and Nathan Sereke reached the round of 16 with a pair of wins Thursday at the men’s tennis USTA ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas. The duo also advanced in doubles play. Bettles beat Idaho’s Cesar Torres 6-2, 6-1 and Utah’s Rafael Davin-Ian 6-0, 6-1 to reach the round of 16, where he will play UNLV’s Ace Matias on Friday.

Sereke beat New Mexico’s James Hignett 6-0, 6-4 and Utah’s Alejandro Medinella 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 and now faces Air Force’s Lance Willheim. In doubles, Bettles and Sereke defeated New Mexico’s Mads Hegelund and Sam Iftkhar 9-8 and will play New Mexico State’s Mark Westgate and Luis Ramirez in the round of 16.

IDAHO STATE PICKED NINTH IN BIG SKY PRESEASON MEN’S HOOPS POLLS: The Bengals received 25 points in the coaches poll and 106 in the media poll, and are ahead of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona in both polls.

Montana, with 98 points and eight first-place votes, was voted to win the league in the coaches poll, and was picked by the media to win with 344 points and 24 first-place votes.
