Ashlee Birk has been sitting in a courtroom since the beginning of last week hearing about the affair her husband had with Kandi Hall the infidelity that ended with his death on March 11, 2011.
During that time, Birk had to endure two days of graphic testimony from Kandi Hall about the affair, which Hall said lasted for six months. Only a few feet away from Birk, across the courtroom, has been Robert Hall, the man accused of shooting and killing her husband because he was upset about the affair.
On Monday, a jury of 10 women and five men finally got to hear from Birk, who said that although she thought in her heart that Corrigan was having an affair with Hall, she was committed to their marriage of seven years and was working hard to figure out what was wrong even though she felt herself and the couples five kids being pushed away for several months.
Birk said she confronted Corrigan about their problems the night he was killed.
I remember at one point grabbing his face and saying, I need to know what is going on. I want to help you and I am not going anywhere. I want to be part of whatever you are struggling with so I can help you, Birk said.
She said Corrigan got angry when she told him that she asked her brother and sister to pray for them. Birk said Corrigan might have felt ganged up on, and said he could beat up her brother and kill you all, referring to Birk and her siblings.
Birk also said that Corrigan told her he loved her and needed her to be patient.
That was my glimmer of hope ... that I would have a chance, that our little family would be worth it to him, Birk said.
Birk said she asked Corrigan to talk to a counselor on the phone that night. It was when she was talking to that person on the phone that Corrigan said he was going to Walgreens.
Thats when he met Kandi Hall and where he was killed a short time later.
Birk also testified Monday that she suspected her husband was using steroids and taking ADHD medication.
Prosecutors say Robert Hall confronted Emmett Corrigan the night of March 11, 2011, and fatally shot him.
The only eyewitness to what happened is Kandi Hall, who told police last year that there was only a verbal confrontation between the two men until she turned her back and heard three shots.
Robert Hall is charged with first-degree murder.
