Kandi Hall says she lied when she said her husband was physically abusive

Published: October 12, 2012

Although Rob Hall is the one on trial for first-degree murder, Friday’s testimony seemed to be more about the truthfulness of Kandi Hall — Hall’s wife and the only eyewitness to the shooting death of Emmett Corrigan on March 11, 2011.

Kandi Hall told a jury Thursday that Emmett Corrigan pushed her husband before the shooting in a Meridian Walgreens parking lot.

She also told the jury that she never really considered leaving her husband, that Hall never abused her physically and that he likely didn’t fully know about her affair with Corrigan until the night of the shooting.

When prosecutors confronted her with evidence Friday challenging that testimony, Kandi Hall told them she didn’t remember what she told police the night of the shooting and that she lied to others.

“If I ever said he was physical with me, it was a lie. ... It was just another lie of mine to make my home situation look bad.”

Asked if she knew that Robert Hall sent Corrigan’s wife a letter telling her about the affair, Kandi Hall said she didn’t learn about it until after the shooting.

Prosecutors say Hall shot and killed Corrigan because of his wife’s affair. After shooting Corrigan, prosecutors say, Hall tried to shoot himself in the head but only grazed his skull. Hall has pleaded not guilty. He told Meridian police in March 2011 that the gun fell out of his pocket during the confrontation.

EAGLE POLICE CHIEF IS A FRIEND

Eagle Police Chief Dana Borgquist, who became friends with Hall while both worked at the Ada County Sheriff's Office, testified that Hall told him he and his wife discussed the letter and how Corrigan would be mad about it.

Borgquist also said Hall had been aware of the affair for months and was contemplating divorce. He went so far as to rent a place where he could live with the couple’s kids.

Kandi Hall confirmed to prosecutors that a Jan. 2, 2011, email sent to her from Robert Hall showed he suspected an affair. The email included such statements as “Good luck with Emmett ... once honeymoon is over you will be left with nothing” and “karma is a bitch and I will have the last laugh.”

NEIGHBOR TESTIFIES

One of Kandi Hall’s neighbors, Tabitha Butterworth, brought her a change of clothes the night of the shooting. Meridian Police officer Natalie Chopko drove Kandi Hall to the police station that night. Both testified that Kandi Hall said the argument was verbal, not physical.

Hall testified Thursday she never really considered leaving her husband during her affair. She did tell prosecutors, however, that she emailed her mother in January 2011 to say “I really just want to run away, Mom,” and “the only thing that has been good in my life with Rob has been the birth of my children.”

After three hours of intense testimony Thursday. Kandi Hall’s Friday testimony lasted less than an hour. She can be recalled to the stand later in the trial.

Testimony will continue Monday. According to court records, prosecutors are expected to call several out-of-state witnesses, who may include Kandi Hall’s family and friends in California who may testify that she was contemplating divorce.
