Zimo: Choices are wide open for fishing

Published: October 10, 2012

With waterfowl season opening Saturday, Oct. 13, deer hunting already under way and upland bird seasons open, if you’re an angler, you might get pretty lonely this weekend.

Reservoirs like C.J. Strike, Horsethief and Cascade are fishing really well.

GOOD FOR PERCH

We’ve received good reports on bass and perch fishing at C.J. Strike and Lake Cascade. You might be surprised by the size of the perch coming out of C.J. Strike. By the way, rivers and streams are low and clear and in prime shape for fly fishing.

TROUT BEING STOCKED

To make the decision even tougher, local waters are getting plenty of trout from Idaho Fish and Game. Check out the list of places above that are being stocked from the Nampa Fish Hatchery.

Now, add the lure of steelhead fishing and it’s even more challenging to decide on what to do for the weekend. Anglers are picking up steelhead in the Salmon River near Riggins. It’s just the beginning and not hot and heavy, but probably worth a shot if you like being on the oars of a drift boat and pulling plugs. What a better way to spend a mild, sunny fall weekend than on the river.

It got me started. I went through my steelhead tackle box the other day and made sure I had a good supply of Hot-N-Tots, Wiggle Warts and Hot Shots. See our Tackle Tip today.

All of my spoons and spinners are ready to go.

I’m heading for the river. Good fishing!
