Boise fire official: Church thrift store burglarized, then set ablaze early Sunday

Published: October 7, 2012

Boise fire officials are investigating an early morning fire at a church thrift store as arson, and there's evidence that the culprits stole money and other items before setting the building ablaze.

Firefighters were called to the New Again Thrift Store, near Franklin and Cole roads, at about 2:47 a.m. Sunday, according to Boise Fire Battalion Chief J.D. Ellis. The fire was reported by a cab driver who saw flames and smoke coming from the one-story building, which is run by Calvary Chapel.

Ellis said it appears one or more burglars gained entry to the building by breaking a window with a rock. They used a hammer to try to break into cash registers and a safe, he said. There was evidence that multiple fires were lit, though firefighters were able to contain it to one back corner of the building. The fire did damage the trusses in the roof in that section, so it is unsafe for anyone to be in that area.
