The Utah Grizzlies defeated Idaho 3-1 on Friday night in Logan, Utah.
The Steelheads got on the board first when rookie forward Austin Mayer fed fellow rookie Andrew Wright with a pass after a Utah turnover.
Wright buried a shot a little more than a minute into the game to give Idaho the early lead.
Utah evened the score 3 minutes later and took control of the contest with two goals in the second period.
Idaho goalie Ryan Rondeau stopped 27-of-30 shots he faced. The Steelheads went 0-for-5 on the power play.
The two teams play again on Idahos home ice Saturday night. The preseason contest is closed to the public and is for season ticket holders only.
Idaho opens the regular season against Utah on Friday at CenturyLink Arena.
