Meridian police officials say 22-year-old Thomas Dylan Williams was caught in Fuller Park on Tuesday night having sexual contact with a girl he met while working as a tutor.
Detectives also have identified a different teenage girl who might be a victim and passed that information on to Boise police, Meridian police Lt. Scott Colaianni said.
Williams is being held in the Ada County Jail on a $100,000 bond on two counts of lewd conduct, which is punishable by up to life in prison. A preliminary hearing on the case is set for Oct. 15.
Meridian police began their investigation Tuesday night after getting a call from someone in Fuller Park, located in the 10 Mile Road/Cherry Lane neighborhood, who said they saw an adult man in a car with what appeared to be a much younger girl. The caller said towels were placed over some of the car windows.
Police arrived moments later and said they found Williams and the girl in the car. Police eventually determined that there was enough evidence of illegal sexual contact to charge Williams with lewd conduct. The girl went home with her parents and Williams was taken to jail, Colaianni said.
It was during the investigation that police determined that Williams met the girl through the Boise School Districts AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, for which officials identify secondary school students who would likely not otherwise continue to college and focus on getting them the background and skills they need to advance.
The AVID program includes daily study groups directed by professional tutors. It is active at Fairmont, North, Riverglen, Hillside and West junior high schools and Capital High School.
Boise School District officials said Williams worked as an AVID tutor between September 2011 and May 2012 but is no longer employed by the district.
Williams tutored at Fairmont and Hillside junior high schools and was paid $10 an hour for the part-time job, according to district records.
Meridian police are asking anyone with information on the case to call 888-6678.
