Barbara "Bobbie" Jeanne Newman, daughter of J.A."Joe" and Kathryn Albertson, died Thursday at her Boise home, according to an obituary in Sunday's Idaho Statesman. She was 79.
Newman's cause of death was not listed, but the obituary noted that she was surrounded by family at the time. Special thanks was given to the staff of St. Luke's Hospice.
A public viewing is planned for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Summers Funeral Homes, 1205 West Bannock Street in Boise. A private family service is also planned. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Anthony Robert Scott memorial scholarship at Boise State University.
Newman grew up in Emmett and in Boise. She worked alongside her mother at age 6 when the family opened the first Albertsons store on State Street in 1939. She graduated from Boise High School in the 1950s and was named Miss Boise in 1951.
She studied at the College of Idaho, where she met her first husband, Jonathan L. Scott. They were married when she was a freshman and had a son, Joseph Buell, in 1953 and a second son, Anthony "Tony" Robert, in 1956.
Newman and Scott divorced in 1962. Twenty years later, she married Donald R. Newman. She was preceded in death by her parents and son Tony.
