Boise State starting left guard Joe Kellogg and starting right tackle Jake Broyles didnt play Thursday night because of injuries. Broyles missed his second straight game.
Junior Spencer Gerke replaced Kellogg, as he did twice last year, and senior Brenel Myers replaced Broyles, as he did last week.
DOUGLAS STARTS AGAIN
Boise State sophomore cornerback Bryan Douglas started for the third straight game. Senior returning starter Jerrell Gavins started the Miami (Ohio) game as a third corner but did not start against Michigan State or BYU.
FRISINA MISSES
Boise State senior kicker Michael Frisina pushed a 33-yard field-goal attempt wide right in the first quarter. It was his second straight game with a miss. The kick would have been a career long. His previous long: 30 yards. The Broncos shied away from kicking field goals after that.
FAKE PUNT FAILS
Boise State tried a fake punt on fourth-and-2 at its own 22-yard line late in the first quarter. Linebacker J.C. Percy, the personal protector on the punt team, took the direct snap and rushed up the middle. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah shed his blocker and made the tackle at the line of scrimmage.
Percy said he was told BYUs players were yelling fake on the field, but he didnt hear them. The Cougars shifted to stop the play.
Right at the last second, when we snapped the ball, they had some line movement, he said.
HALFTIME SHUTOUT
Neither team scored in the first half a first for a Boise State game since 1994 (Eastern Washington).
Boise State was shut out in the first half for the first time since the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl loss to Boston College at Bronco Stadium. That was the last game of coach Dan Hawkins tenure. The Broncos lost 27-21.
BYU was shut out in the first half for the first time since a 2011 game at Ole Miss. The Cougars won that game 14-13.
QUICK HITS
Boise State wore all blue uniforms with the blue Pro Combat helmets. Boise States captains included senior right guard Michael Ames, a former LDS missionary. The others were defensive tackle Darren Koontz, defensive tackle Mike Atkinson and wide receiver Chris Potter. Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick tried a surprise punt on fourth-and-13 and Dallas Burroughs downed the 33-yarder at the 1-yard line. ... This is the second straight game between the Broncos and Cougars decided by one point.
