Caldwell man gets 20 years to life for lewd conduct with two teens

Published: September 17, 2012

Adrian A. Harthcock, 30, of Caldwell will serve at least 10 years and up to life in prison for each of two charges of having sex with girls younger than 16, 3rd District Judge Molly Husky ruled Monday.

The two sentences will run consecutively, putting Harthcock in prison for at least 20 years, Canyon County Prosecutor Bryan Taylor said. Prosecutors had requested sentences of 15 years to life.

Huskey also ordered Harthcock to register as a sex offender, pay each victim a $5,000 civil penalty and have no contact with the victims or their immediate families. A jury found Harthcock guilty last month of two felony counts of lewd conduct with a minor.

The victims, age 13 and 15, were runaways and responded to an ad placed by Harthcock on Craigslist, Taylor said. Harthcock had the girls get down on their hands and knees in his home, spanked them and had sex with them, according to court records.

At trial, Harthcock testified he only had sex with the girls to exert his dominance and control over them. He told the judge he was deceived about the girls’ ages and “didn’t know what was happening.”

Deputy prosecutor Erica Kallin said police told Harthcock the first victim was a minor, and “his response was to find an even younger child and have sex with her.”

“He doesn’t care about the consequences; he just cares about himself,” Kallin said.

“You say you are not hostile to women and yet the victims were made to crawl around like slaves and act like animals,” Huskey told Harthcock. “This shows hostility to women. You have dominance and control proclivities … you pose a danger to the community.”

The crimes reportedly occurred April 30 and June 26 of 2011.
