COACH

Second-year coach Don Treadwell (5-9) shouldn’t have any trouble assembling a scouting report on the Broncos. He was the offensive coordinator at Cincinnati from 2004-06 and at Michigan State from 2007-10 — all under Mark Dantonio, whose Michigan State team beat Boise State in this year’s season opener.

Treadwell was a four-year starting wide receiver at Miami from 1978-81. He holds the school records for career (21.1) and single-season (22.0) yards per catch.

OFFENSE

The RedHawks threw 90 passes and ran the ball 53 times in the first two games. Senior quarterback Zac Dysert is an accurate, mobile, difficult-to-tackle playmaker, and he’s surrounded by some talented receivers with whom he has terrific chemistry.

Junior Nick Harwell caught eight passes for 120 yards against Ohio State, including two plays over 40 yards. He has topped 100 yards in 10 of his past 13 games and holds the school record with a 97-catch season. Senior Andy Cruse ranks fourth in the nation with 20 catches — and he’s Dysert’s longtime roommate.

The run game has generated just 2.1 yards per carry. The leading rusher is Spencer Treadwell (77 yards), the coach’s son.

DEFENSE

The RedHawks finished 48th in total defense (363.7 yards per game) and 39th in scoring defense (22.9 points per game) last year. The numbers aren’t pretty this year, but that’s largely because of the season-opening loss at Ohio State.

Miami is a 4-3 team that can shift into a three-man front, like Boise State. The defensive line is a strength — end Wes Williams (nine tackles), tackle Austin Brown (35 career starts), tackle Mike Johns (12 straight starts) and end Jason Semmes (five tackles, sack vs. Ohio State). Weak-side linebacker Pat Hinkel, who moved from safety this season, leads the team with 18 tackles and two interceptions.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Punter Zac Murphy averaged 42.8 yards per punt last week, more than a 5-yard improvement over the season opener, and helps the RedHawks with field position. Kicker Kaleb Patterson, a true freshman, is 2-for-3 on field goals and 4-for-5 on PATs. Dayonne Nunley is a threat as a punt returner.
