Vandals football: What we've learned after two games

Published: September 11, 2012

• Dominique Blackman really is that good: In his first FBS action, against Bowling Green on Saturday, the junior QB was 30-of-37 for 352 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He showed poise and command in the pocket, delivering accurate, sharp passes all day. Even when under pressure, he was able to make good decisions.

• There’s depth at receiver: Najee Lovett played lights out against Eastern Washington, catching eight passes for 105 yards. Although Bowling Green held Lovett to only two catches, Jahrie Level caught 10 for 119 yards. If these guys can continue to contribute to a corps led by Mike Scott and Justin Veltung, they could give defenses trouble.

• Idaho needs help on the offensive line: The line gave up four sacks and struggled protecting the quarterback. In short-yardage situations, it couldn’t open any holes for running backs, and on third downs Blackman was often under heavy pressure.

• Run game is not working: Some of the blame is on the line for being unable to open anything up for Ryan Bass and James Baker, but clearly something else is going wrong. After Idaho was held to 73 yards rushing against Eastern Washington, the Vandals were able to muster only six yards on the ground against Bowling Green. Bass led the way with eight attempts for 14 yards.
