Idaho colleges roundup: Boise State volleyball wins easily in home opener

The Broncos swept Eastern Washington in straight sets, 25-9, 25-16, 25-23, on Wednesday night at Bronco Gym. BSU held the Eagles to a .099 hitting percentage, while the Broncos hit .326 as a team. Alyssa Gammel led the BSU offense with 12 kills, and Liz Harden chipped in 10 kills. It’s the second straight win for the Broncos (3-4), who host a home tournament Friday and Saturday.

BOISE STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:/strong> Cody Butler was named assistant coach. Butler has coached at Yakima Valley Community College the past 12 years, nine of which he served as head coach. His responsibilities at Boise State will include coaching the guards, recruiting, scouting and assisting with team workouts.

IDAHO WOMEN’S GOLF: Recent grad Kayla Mortellaro and Renee Skidmore, a 2008 grad, advanced to the second round of the LPGA Qualifying School. During the first phase at LPGA International at Dayton Beach, Fla., Mortellaro carded a 1-under 143 to tie for 16th place. Skidmore tied for 37th with a 145.
